About
Established in 1814, North Yarmouth Academy is an independent, college-preparatory coeducational day school for students in grades 5-12. Just 10 miles from downtown Portland, NYA is located in the center of historic Yarmouth, Maine.
NYA attracts students who value new and challenging academic experiences and who seek the satisfaction and reward that come from dedication, commitment, and hard work. At NYA, it is “cool” to study hard, to participate in a wide variety of programs, to take advantage of new opportunities, and to be a committed and responsible member of the school community.
At NYA, no students are lost in the back row or fall through the cracks. The school’s faculty members, 43 percent of whom hold advanced degrees, are dedicated and committed educators who are successful in encouraging students to achieve their best, both in the classroom and other areas of school life. The school’s small size (300 students), small class size (average class size of 15), and low student/faculty ratio (7:1) provide a learning environment that promotes individual attention and strong relationships between students and faculty.
NYA’s structured and challenging academic program provides students with an exceptionally strong foundation in reading, writing, and quantitative and analytic skills. The school’s Advanced Placement Program offers courses in 14 subjects. Approximately 70 percent of NYA’s students take AP examinations each year, many in multiple subjects. In 2009, 55 percent of the results were score of 4 or 5, and 82 percent were scores of 3, 4, or 5.
NYA students participate in a wide variety of visual and performing arts programs, including band, chorus, and drama. As students explore the arts and unleash their creativity, they often discover new talents and interests. The school considers its inclusive and competitive athletic program a point of distinction: students participate in athletics in each of the three seasons, and everyone is an athlete and active member of the team, regardless of ability.
During the school year, NYA students give thousands of hours to community service, assisting more than 55 community and civic organizations in the greater Portland area. NYA’s ethic defines and articulates the school’s commitment to the values of respect, honesty, perseverance, compassion, and responsibility.
