Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis, or “mono,” is an illness caused by a viral infection. If you have received a notice of recent diagnosis of mono in the NYA community, notify your healthcare provider of possible exposure to mono. There is no policy for exclusion from school because of mono. It is a contagious disease and it is asked that routine caution be followed, such as – good hand washing and no sharing of eating or drinking utensils.

Early symptoms resemble those of the flu:

  • Severe fatigue
  • Headache
  • Sore throat, sometimes very severe
  • Chills, followed by a fever
  • Muscle aches

Symptoms that may occur:

  • Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck, armpits or groin
  • Jaundice, a yellow tinge to the skin and eyes
  • A measles like skin rash anywhere on the face or body
  • Bruise like areas inside the mouth
  • Soreness in the upper left abdomen, from an enlarged spleen
