Pertussis/Whooping Cough

Pertussis/Whooping cough is an acute bacterial infection of the respiratory tract. If you have received a notice of recent diagnosis of pertussis in the NYA community, notify your healthcare provider of possible exposure to pertussis.

  • Early stages (1-2 weeks) runny nose, sneezing, mild fever and non-productive cough. The cough gradually becomes more severe.
  • Development of the “whooping cough” and vomiting that is usually more frequent at night. (2-6 weeks)
  • Recovery/later stage – cough decreases in frequency and intensity. (2 or more weeks)
