ImPACT: Concussion Management Software

About ImPACT

North Yarmouth Academy started utilizing the ImPACT program in 2001. At first, participation was in the Upper School primarily for students who played a sport with ImPACT (concussion) potential. As the program has evolved over the years, it is apparent that, given the athletic requirement at NYA, all students could benefit from it. Although historically the focus of the program has been related to concussions during athletic activity, it can also be utilized for concussions that are not sports related. Therefore it is prudent that all students participate.

The program consists of a questionnaire for profile information and health history; current symptoms and conditions; and a test using words, shapes and use of mouse/keyboard to test memory and reaction time. The program’s baseline test, when compared to a post-concussion test, provides valuable information which can assist healthcare providers in diagnosing, managing care and determining return to activity for persons with a concussion.

All new students and returning students whose previous baseline tests are two years old or more will take the ImPACT test early in the first trimester. Some details:

  • The process takes approximately 30-45 minutes, with the actual test being 20-30 minutes. It is done in groups of 10-12.
  • Middle School students will do the program in the afternoon after classes from 2-2:45 in the Middle School computer lab. Their coaches will be notified that they will miss and/or be late for practice. A student will not be scheduled on the day before or day of a competition.
  • Upper School students will do the program during first period study hall from 8-8:45 in the science computer lab.
  • The results are then stored securely electronically by ImPACT. Access to the results is limited to those who have permission, primarily the school nurse, and if she is not available, her designee.
  • If a student has a concussion, a post-concussion test is then done, usually within 24-48 hours and is compared to the baseline. That information will be provided to parents, primary care provider, and if indicated, a referral to a physician with experience in the ImPACT program. If indicated, the test is taken more often.
  • Actual example: Student with a severe concussion took 5 post concussion tests over a 3 month period. The results assisted the physician in determining when the student could return to sports and also indicated the need for more time to complete homework and/or take an academic test.
  • The program is conducted by Ashley Moody, School Nurse and when possible, with the assistance of a parent volunteer.
