Wes Norton ’07 and I spent the 2010 spring semester in Kenya with SLU’s Kenya Semester Program with 22 other students. We were based in Karen, a suburb of Nairobi. We took classes in Nairobi, spent a week with the Massai living outside of Amboseli National Park, a week with the Hadzabe, a hunter gatherer tribe of the Yeada Valley in Tanzania, did rural and urban homestays, and completed a month long independent study. For my independent study I lived in Watamu (central coast) and took part in a Sykes monkey study, exploring the effects of tourism and food supplementation on in the monkeys. Wes was located on Lamu, an island off the coast of Northern Kenya. He interviewed native Dhow captains in order to explore the use of traditional celestial navigation. On our mid-semester break Wes and I joined 8 of our peers to hike Mt. Kenya. We summited Pt. Lenana (16,355 ft).”

James Giberson '06
January 2011: Jim writes, “Greetings from Chicagoland!
“I completed my degree in the School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University in December 2010, after transferring to a specialization in Construction Engineering and Management my Junior year. My experience at Purdue was challenging, but opened a lot of doors that I had never considered. Although Purdue has no school of music, I was able to sing at the collegiate level as a member of the Purdue Varsity Glee Club. Recently, I had the privilege of being featured in the School of Engineering’s
‘Engineering Impact’ Magazine for my involvement in the arts. … I’m hoping that I may be able to help bring the Glee Club to the northeast someday to share the unique style of entertainment with everyone.
“Since graduation I began a position as a Project Engineer for Thieneman Construction, Inc., a firm near Chicago, IL in northwest Indiana. I interned with the firm in the summers leading up to graduation, working on projects focused primarily on water treatment and the construction of treatment facilities. Recently, Thieneman Construction began an exciting partnership with Algaewheel, a company that uses algae in the water treatment process. I am excited for the growing potential of this partnership, and the technology’s applications towards water treatment, renewable energy, and more sustainable processes.
“I was home briefly during the holidays and had a chance to stop by the North Yarmouth campus. The grounds and facilities are beautiful, and it’s always nice to see friendly and familiar faces. I hope to stay better connected to NYA in the coming years, and wish everyone all the best.”

Amy’s adventures in Bologna, Italy, this semester. Here’s an excerpt from a recent post:

February 2011: This past November, the Tyler Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists families whose children are undergoing treatment for epilepsy at Children’s Hospital Boston and UMass Memorial Children’s Hospital hosted their 2nd annual fundraising dinner. Visit
www.tylerfoundation.org for more information.
In the attached photo are Rachel (Levine) Ziminski ’96, a member of the board and the event committee for the Tyler Foundation and guest speaker Travis Roy. The event was a great opportunity to support children and their families who are undergoing extensive treatment for epilepsy. NYA has a great community of alumni willing to help each other. I am very proud of the work Travis has done over the years to help others and I was honored to have him speak at the event.
Warm regards,
