NYA’s 2010 Grads to Receive Alumni Care Packages

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) 2010 graduates will get a little taste of home this week when they receive a package from NYA. Each November, the Alumni office mails packages to NYA’s newest graduates at their college or university. Inside, they will find treats like microwave popcorn, candy, “David’s Famous Cookies” (fresh from the NYA kitchen) and other snacks.  The package also includes a graduation class photo,  a letter from the Alumni office updating them on happenings at the school, an invitation to Alumni Sports Day, and an official NYA post-it pad.

“We like to send our newest alumni a little reminder of NYA in the hope that they will keep in touch with us now and in future years. We also realize that items such as cookies and popcorn are always a very welcomed surprise at college! The graduation photo and update letter are all a bonus,” said Kate Putnam, Chief Development Officer. “It is usually challenging to get our alumni’s college addresses each year, but it was much easier this time because most of them are our ‘friends’ on Facebook,” said Peter Gerrity ’05, Development/Alumni Intern. “I remember receiving mine at Hamilton [College]. My roommates were all amazed that my high school would go to the trouble of sending me a care package. It was pretty cool,” said Gerrity.

Veterans Day Flagpole Ceremony

Early this chilly morning, before classes, the NYA community gathered around the Fogg Flagpole on the front lawn – students, faculty and staff. Peter Sillin, History Department Chair, addressed the crowd. A full transcript of his remarks follows. NYA conducts two flagpole ceremonies during the school year – one for Veterans Day, and one for Memorial Day – to remind the community about the reason for and significance of these occasions. Their true meaning extends beyond mere “days off” and transcends our usual mundane concerns and political differences, reinforcing our shared American legacy.
