NYA took the lead at the very beginning of the game with a penalty shot by Katherine Millett. All eyes were on Millett as she drove the ball into the top right-hand corner of Freeport’s net. After only 1:36 NYA was already ahead, 1-0. The first half was close, both teams had a fair amount of shots, but with 0:10 left in the first half Millett passed the ball to Olivia Madore, giving NYA an insurance goal going into the second half. The second half was much more intense, both teams looking to end the game with a win. Freeport’s goalie was stumped again however by Kayla Rose with only 10 minutes remaining in the game after Carly Lappas gained possession and immediately looked to Rose in front of the net. Elizabeth Coughlin ended the game with a shutout. This win leaves NYA in first place of the Western Class C standings.
The JV team also enjoyed a 3-0 shutout of Freeport with goals contributed by Maura Anderson, Bailey Clock, and Meaghan O’Leary.

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) received a $40,000 gift, the first of a three-year anonymous donation, to launch an experiential education program for all students in all grades. The program includes a broad spectrum of experiences designed to help each student build and learn leadership, communication, self-reliance and teamwork skills. The program has been incorporated into NYA’s current curriculum and will include outdoor components designed to strengthen students’ appreciation of the environment. “We envision a program for each grade level each year that is both connected to the curriculum and to the reflective development of each student,” said Head of School Brad Choyt. “We expect that this vision will take three years to become fully integrated into the curriculum and the culture of the school. Curriculum connections this first year are only a beginning and will grow over the course of the next few years,” explained Choyt.

NYA hired Kelly Orr to oversee the program as Experiential Education Coordinator. Orr is a 2006 graduate of Bowdoin College and completed the Extended Teacher Education Program at the University of Southern Maine where she is a candidate for a Master of Science in Applied Literacy. She served as a teaching intern at the Leadership School at Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine, led extended canoe trips, taught white water paddling and safety skills, and served as the coordinator of freshmen pre-orientation trips at Bowdoin College. “I am very excited about the potential for implementing a comprehensive Experiential Education curriculum at NYA. There is great energy among the faculty and staff around this program, and I am really looking forward to collaborating with my colleagues as we develop EE learning opportunities both in the classroom and all over Maine.”

Senior captain Moira Lachance tied the game up with an unassisted goal 17:37 into the second half. The North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) class of 1961 will be holding a reunion on Sunday, September 25, 2011. The class of 1961 is unique because it was the last class of local high school students to attend NYA as their public high school. Yarmouth High School opened in the fall of 1961, and from that time forward, NYA became a choice for students from the local area instead of the only option. “It doesn’t matter where you joined us along the way, everyone who went to NYA at some time is included in this reunion,” said Sharon Libby Sharp, an alumna and one of the event organizers. Over 35 people are expected at this event.

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is excited to be field testing a pilot program to help students learn genetics concepts through interactive simulation. The Geniverse program teaches core understanding of heredity and meiosis by modeling real genetics problems and research processes. Students take on the role of collaborating scientists researching dragon traits and get a feel for bioinformatics. Feedback from students and teachers will be used to refine the program which should be available to the public by 2014.

Mrs. Farrell and the AP Biology class
The pilot program, funded by the National Science Foundation, is being developed by the Concord Consortium in conjunction with The Jackson Laboratory, Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance, Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) and TERC. Biology teacher Barbara Farrell is implementing the program. “I was selected to participate in this program after attending a Genetics conference at Amherst College a few years ago. I’m very excited to be able to offer my students a different way to learn this material, and so far, the Advanced Placement Biology students are excited to be playing computer games in class to supplement their learning,” said Farrell. Farrell plans to include her tenth grade biology classes in the program as well.
