Performing Arts Program

September 8, 2011

Opportunities in the performing arts are offered as an alternative to athletics. The performing arts create an experience that fosters teamwork, personal achievement, and a sense of community. Students involved in the performing arts get valuable experience working with a strict deadline in a non-competitive environment.

Upper School students may take no more than two seasons of afternoon Performing Arts each year. Middle School students may participate in Performing Arts during the winter and/or spring trimesters.

Afternoon Performing Arts Offerings

WINTER:

  • Drama Production: [Open to a limited number of students in grades 6-12 by audition.] NYA stages a major dramatic production every winter. This production rehearses five days a week [3:30-5:30 pm Mondays, 3:00-5:00 pm Tuesday-Friday] starting in early November right after the fall athletic season. This is a huge time commitment and evening rehearsals are held the week prior to the performance. Auditions are held in late fall.
  • Studio Band: [Open to all music students, grades 9-12.] The NYA studio band rehearses everyday during the winter term from 3:00 – 4:45 pm. The band rehearses specific songs, performs at athletic events, and offers support when needed to the winter drama production. The band also performs at many special events.

SPRING:

  • Upper School Drama: Upper School drama students rehearse and perform one-act plays during the spring term. Rehearsals are held five days a week as during the Winter trimester.
  • Middle School Drama: A spring performance may be offered to students in grades 6 – 8. Rehearsals for this production are 2:30-3:30 pm five days a week.
