Farewell, Elmer Libby … Rest in Peace

Dear NYA Community:

I am sad to report that on Sunday evening, October 30, Elmer Libby passed away.  Our school has lost another long-time friend whose career began in 1961 and continued until 2011, when he was no longer able to easily move around campus.   Elmer served most of his tenure as the Head of Maintenance, helping to make NYA’s facilities what they are today.    The 1969 yearbook recorded this fitting tribute: “Wherever we went…on campus…somehow litter accumulated.  Left to Elmer Libby and his crew to clean up as well as keep us warm, mend the broken, and finally to be the best guys on campus.”  This remembrance from students of a unique and humble man who loved being a part of our school captures his quiet and dedicated service over the last half century.

Please visit this article about Elmer’s surprise 90th birthday celebration and 50-year NYA milestone.

At this time, no services are planned.  However, we are in the process of determining how to best honor his memory and are in touch with his family to do this in a way Elmer would have hoped.

Yours truly,

Brad Choyt
Head of School

A Tribute to “Bud”

One of the graduation requirements for seniors at NYA is the “Senior Speech,” an original presentation designed to demonstrate public speaking skills. On Wednesdays throughout most of the academic year, the school community – including the entire student body, faculty, staff, and family members - eagerly gathers to listen.   On Wednesday, October 26, Cailean (“Nugget”) Lane presented his senior speech, in which he paid tribute to “Bud” Flaherty, a history teacher (and so much more) who devoted his entire (41 years) career to NYA and who succumbed to cancer recently. With Cay’s permission, we are sharing it with you here … Thank you, Nugget!

NYA Girls Soccer finishes the season with double overtime game.

NYA’s final game was this past Monday against Lake Region. Lake Region scored first in the first half but after that NYA kept them at bay. In the second half Chloe Leishman scored NYA’s first goal to tie the game up at 1-1.  The game remained tied as NYA forced a double overtime, until Lake Region scored to win the game.  Despite the loss it was one of NYA’s best games of the season.
