Creative Community Service Event Yields Smiles All Around

On Thursday, November 10, NYA students, faculty and staff attended a community service event to benefit those in need locally and globally. For a $10 donation, each participant could make four greeting cards – two to take home and two to donate to Ronald McDonald House in Portland. The entire $10 registration fee went to A Village of Children to support orphans in Bolivia.

Creative cardmakers hard at work!

Science teacher Barbara Farrell and Grace Gilbert ’13 (North Yarmouth) organized the event. On Friday, Barbara reported that she “went to Ronald McDonald house and dropped off 43 cards that were made yesterday at the card making event. They were SOOO thankful!  We also raised about $130 for A Village of Children, with a few more donations to be collected … Thank you to those who donated money to A Village of Children, to those who made cards for Ronald McDonald House and to those who did both!!!  I hope you had as much fun as I did.  It was wonderful to see the MS and US faculty, staff and students’ creativity and generosity in action.”

Class of 1961

In honor of their 50th reunion, the Class of 1961 raised $775.00 to donate to The First Parish Church Food Pantry in Yarmouth. Jane Small Plante explains, “What does it mean when a high school class reunites after 50 years? Reconnections and recollections of times spent together? In the case of the NYA class of 1961, it also means saying thank you to a town that gave them all so many memories. How to say thank you should seem like an easy task…a plaque…a tree…or flowers added to a garden, etc. These would all seem appropriate for some classes, but our class was special as we were the last class to graduate [from NYA] before Yarmouth High School was built. For that reason, it was decided that any gift given needed to benefit any and all in our hometown. As a result, we the class of  ’61 are proud to contribute $775.00 to The First Parish Church Food Pantry. Thank you Town of Yarmouth and North Yarmouth Academy for sending out into the world a REALLY TERRIFIC class that has indeed strived to make you proud – even now – as we did way back when!”
