NYA Swimmer competes in December 23rd swim meet

NYA swimmer Ted Elliot ‘13 competed in a December 23rd meet with Kennebunk andYarmouth at the York YMCA.  Despite suffering from a head cold, Ted won the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:11.49; a few tenths of seconds faster than his previous time and well ahead of the next swimmer.  He also tried the 200m freestyle and came in second with a time of 2:25.13, only a few seconds behind the winner from Kennebunk.  At this stage of the season Ted hasn’t finished lower than 3rd place in a race, and we all look forward to what the next meet on January 5th will bring.

NYA Establishes Merit Scholars Program

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is pleased to announce the establishment of the NYA Merit Scholars Program. The NYA Merit Scholars Program is designed to recognize deserving students and provide them with the opportunity to attend North Yarmouth Academy. This year, one full and one partial scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman student. One full scholarship and one partial scholarship will also be awarded to a rising sophomore, junior or senior student. The scholarship honors the student’s achievements and covers the cost of tuition over the course of the student’s career at NYA. Current and new students are eligible for these scholarships.

Applicants must be nominated for the award and should demonstrate qualities that are intrinsic to NYA’s mission. The nomination process is open to any adult who knows the student’s academic abilities and character and can speak to that on the nomination form. (NYA teachers, coaches and staff are not eligible to nominate students.) Nominees will be invited to apply to NYA, and a Scholarship Committee will review the applicants and invite the top ten finalists to campus for interviews. Nominations must be received by January 10, 2012, and applications are due on February 10, 2012. Scholarship recipients will be notified by March 20, 2012.

“We are thrilled to be able to attract exceptional students and recognize their accomplishments through these generous scholarships. With this program, students will not only have the opportunity to benefit from our academic, athletic and the arts offerings, but also enhance our community through their talents in these areas,” said Head of School Brad Choyt.

To nominate a student, please contact NYA’s Admission Office at 846-2376.

Joshua Wright ’00

This summer,  Sara and I welcomed our second daughter, Addison [their daughter Evelyn is 2].  This fall, I completed my master’s degree and moved to Groton, CT to attend the submarine officers advanced course (Department Head School).   We will be moving again in the spring to Bangor, WA where I will relieve as the ship’s engineer on a Ohio Class ballistic missile submarine.”

Martha Hodsdon Despeaux ’59

Martha went to Gettysburg College following graduation from NYA and left early to get married and have a family.  She went back to school and became a very successful accountant in Baltimore.  She was a CFO and General Manager of a large beauty supply company among other things.  She and her husband Edward are retired and live in Atlantic City.  Martha called to let us know that her brother, Col. Dennis K. Hodsdon, Ret. ’56, passed away Nov. 1, 2011. “He had a successful 26 year military career after graduating from Bowdoin College. Dennis was a passionate bird watcher who loved birding and had close to 800 birds on his personal bird list. He was a good person and loyal NYA supporter. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.”

Lissa von Brecht ’02

“I moved back to the East Coast from Chicago at the end of June and I am finally starting to settle down. I am living in Newport, RI coaching tennis at Salve Regina University and was just recently hired as the Fundraiser Coordinator for Barry Hinckley’s (as in Hinckley Yachts) senate campaign here in Rhode Island.  Hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to the Class of 2002 10-year reunion!”
