Rufus Jones ’62

“I moved down to SC a couple of years ago and love it here.  But – and there is always a ‘but’, isn’t there? – since the move I’ve heard not a word from NYA, so wanted to make sure you all (See, I’m talking Southern already) have my ‘new’ contact info.

“I’ve been doing some wonderful traveling since my retirement, most recently a Danube River cruise and also St. Martin – and of course Maine (Boothbay Harbor) summers.  Other than that, I’ve been in a few writing groups, am a volunteer for Meals On Wheels, play tennis, enjoy some biking and a lot of photography here around the Charleston, SC, area, and just recently took my first parachute jump.  I haven’t yet quite come down from the latter experience, figuratively speaking of course.  What a ‘high’!  (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that one).

“Anyone know if there are any plans for a 50th reunion for the Class of ’62?”

Millard “Bob” Crossett ’47

“All the living members of ’47 are planning to be at the reunion in September for our 65th.  There are 17 planning to attend.”

George Briggs ’99

“I am living in Brooklyn, NY with my wife, Becca, and our beagle, Archie.  I am a Latin teacher currently working at Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, CT.  Before working there, I lived and worked at St. George’s School, a boarding school in Newport, RI.  I still wear Converse All-Stars, but the colors match now.  We all have to grow up sometime, I suppose.”

Eleanor Rideout Feliu ’57

“I remember my years at NYA very fondly.  It was a wonderful place to attend high school during a much more innocent time.  I always felt that the education I received there served me well.”  Eleanor is retired from the National Security Agency in Ft. George G. Meade, MD in 1995 after 35 years of service.

Jenna Lane ’08

Jenna’s dad let us know that “Jenna will receive the ‘Alice Hutchinson Lytle Biology Award’ next week. The College of Wooster presents the award annually to the senior who has the achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in the undergraduate biology program over the 3 years of the program. Jenna is also currently working on an independent study project which involves testing the effects of pesticides on native and invasive insect species.”

NYA Exhibits Work at Mercy Urgent Care in Yarmouth

Mercy Hospital Yarmouth will host its third art exhibition since opening almost a year ago with a show that includes North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) faculty, students and alumni. The exhibit will be open to Mercy Yarmouth patients as well as the public during the month of March. An opening reception is scheduled for February 28 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Mercy Yarmouth, 385 U.S. Route One, Yarmouth.

The exhibit includes a compilation of black and white photography by NYA photography teacher, Abbie Sewall, and several award-winning images by students who attended NYA from 2001 to 2008 and were recognized by the Scholastic Arts & Writing Competition.

Also featured as part of the NYA show is a series of Xerox transfer prints created by ninth through twelfth grade art students under the direction of Upper School art teacher Mimi Olins and visiting artist Judith Allen Efstathiou. The range of works was influenced by the students’ visit to the Institute of Contemporary Art in Portland. Each delicate student piece reflects a significant personal memory or a special historical place and is accompanied by a written narrative.

North Yarmouth Academy is an independent, college preparatory, coeducational day school serving students in grades five through twelve. For 198 years, NYA has fostered integrity, character and intellect in young adults. For more information, please contact NYA at 207-847-5423 or visit our website at www.nya.org.

Jesse McIntire ’99

“I work for Transocean Offshore as chief engineer on the deep-water drill ship Discoverer Spirit. The Spirit is presently offshore Sierra Leone, West Africa. I work a 28 day rotation and live in Orono, Maine with my wife Dara, and our two children. In my days off I am working on a novel about life in small town Maine and the world. I often think fondly of NYA and the experiences I had there, that contrast so sharply with my chosen career field. And…Mme Perkins would be happy to know that I have finally put my four years of French to good use…in broken conversation with the local subcontractors that work onboard.”

NYA Student Named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) proudly announces that Brian Trelegan ’12 (Cumberland) is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. There are over 1.5 million entries based on PSAT test scores, and Trelegan is one of 16,000 students, the top 1% of students, nationwide. He is now in consideration for one of the approximately 8,400 Merit Scholarships. “NYA is proud of Brian’s achievements. The NYA community offers its heartfelt congratulations,” said John Drisko, Head of the Upper School. Scholarship offers will be mailed to winners in March.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance and was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC’s own funds and approximately 500 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goal of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

Trelegan’s advisor and coach Peter Sillin remarked, “As anyone who has ever been in class with him knows, Brian’s academic horsepower is really impressive, so this honor comes as no surprise. But Brian is such a great teammate, friend, and member of the community that everyone here is especially pleased for him.”
