NYA Robotics Team Competes in World Championships

The VEX Robotics team at North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) competed with 600 of the top VEX robotics teams from over 20 countries in the VEX 2012 World Robotics Championships in Anaheim, CA. In their debut appearance at Worlds, NYA Robotics posted a 4-6-0 record, placing 63 (out of 99 teams) in the Engineering Division. NYA’s invitation was based on their performance in the programming skills challenge at the New England Championships in Worcester, MA in early March.

Deb Adams, NYA science teacher and robotics team advisor, said, “We were thrilled to be able to participate at Worlds, and grateful for all the support we received to make the trip possible. It was an amazing experience for everyone, and the NYA team competed at an incredibly high level. I’m very proud of them.”

Christopher Edwards ’13, who serves as the president of Delta Chi fraternity at Hobart and William Smith, recently received the Outstanding “A” award from the National Delta Chi Fraternity during the Region VII Leadership Conference in Massachusetts. The award recognizes an outstanding Delta Chi fraternity president. Congratulations!

Online bidding available now!

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is holding its 28th annual charity auction on Saturday, May 5 in Travis Roy Arena, 497 US Route 1, Yarmouth. Proceeds from the auction benefit financial aid and enrichment programs at NYA. The auction committee, comprised of NYA parent volunteers, hopes to surpass $100,000 at this event. This year’s theme is “Cinco de Mayo.” Members of the public are encouraged to attend.

There will be over 400 silent auction items ranging from luxury overnight stays and fine art to jewelry, pottery and personal training sessions. Bidding online has begun, visit www.nya.org and click on the auction logo to view and bid on items. There will be a raffle for a $10,000 cash prize (raffle tickets on sale at the auction or in advance – call 846-2380 for more information). The winner does not have to be in attendance.

The highlight of the evening will be the live auction with auctioneer Charlie Crosby. A sample of items up for bid include:

One week stay at an English cottage in Newbury, Berkshire, England
Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots Tickets
Parking spot in the Dole House lot
One week stay in a Northeast Harbor Cottage
Yoga and breakfast with Charlotte Bacon
Sebago Lake getaway at Migis Lodge
Cocktail cruise on Casco Bay followed by Cousins Island lobster bake

Tickets for the auction are $30 in advance and $35 at the door and include dinner, entertainment by Steel Industry (the NYA steel drum band) and a cash bar. Advance tickets are suggested. Corporate Sponsorships are still available at various levels. Call 847-5423 for more information.

NYA Boys Lacrosse Game to Benefit Wounded Warrior Project

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is hosting a boys varsity lacrosse game to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project on Saturday, April 28 at 11:00 a.m. on NYA’s Lewis (turf) field (154 Main Street, Yarmouth). NYA will play 2011 Class A champion Scarborough High School. A gate fee will not be charged, but donations will be encouraged. A military color guard and speakers from active duty and retired military will be part of the program. Players will be wearing special jerseys in honor of the event.

The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors. Tens of thousands of wounded warriors receive support each year through the WWP programs and services designed to nurture the mind and body and to encourage economic empowerment and engagement. NYA Announces Merit Scholars

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is pleased to announce the 2012-2013 merit scholarship award recipients:

Full Scholarships:

The merit scholars program at NYA is designed to recognize deserving students and provide them with the opportunity to attend North Yarmouth Academy. The scholarship honors student achievement and covers the cost of tuition over the course of their career at NYA. This is the first year of this program, and both current and new students were eligible for the scholarships. There were 41 nominations this year.

NYA Names Athletic Director

After an extensive search, North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jack Hardy as Director of Athletics. For the past seven years, Hardy served as the Assistant Principal in the Falmouth school system. Prior to that, he was Athletic Director at Greely High School and Middle School in Cumberland for 14 years, where he worked with students in grades 6-12, earning the respect and admiration of many other athletic directors, coaches and student athletes throughout Maine. Hardy’s experience in schools dates back to the late 1970’s when he began his career as a physical education and classroom teacher in Cape Elizabeth.

“Jack has an extensive knowledge of Maine athletics and an emphasis on teaching character through both practice and team competition. These qualities set Jack apart from the other highly qualified candidates for this position,” said Brad Choyt, NYA’s Head of School. “We are confident he will bring great leadership to NYA’s athletic program while also working closely with students and coaches during each season and on every level,” announced Choyt.
