Former NYA headmaster John “Jack” Mitchell: An obituary
We received the following from David Mitchell, Jack’s son:
“John Harrison ‘Jack’ Mitchell of Rancho Bernardo, composer of such songs as ‘Rancho Bernardo High’ and renowned for his trumpet gigs and MC roles at countless community events and gatherings, died on Wednesday, March 14 from myelodysplasia and complications from a fall after the death of Harriet Leighton Mitchell, Jack’s beloved wife of 64 years, on August 10, 2011.
“Jack was born July 8, 1918 in South Easton, Massachusetts, as one of two children of Horace and Mary Mitchell. Working part-time in the Mitchell family general store, Jack attended the public schools in Easton and took up the trumpet and other musical instruments in high school. Jack worked his way through the University of New Hampshire by leading a jazz band and playing at numerous nightclubs and private parties throughout New England. After graduating in 1941 with a major in biology and a minor in music education, Jack served with the Special Services of the Army Air Corps at Peterson Army Air Field in Colorado Springs, and then taught music, science, and photography at Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire, Moses Brown School in Rhode Island, Horace Mann School for Boys in New York City, and Scarsdale High School. Jack met Harriet in 1946 while both were camp counselors in Bridgton, Maine; they were married in June 1947.
Shawn Curtis ’95
Shawn wrote to thank us for the NYA bib we sent him. His daughter Jillian Elizabeth Curtis was born on November 5, 2011 in Hartford, CT.
“Our family is doing very well. Both Jordyn (my wife) and I work for The LEGO Group and Jillian (now 4 months old) attends the LEGO daycare on campus….a true LEGO family. We get back to Maine a few times a year during the summer months, spending time on Frye Island. This year marks my seventh year with The LEGO Group; currently I am responsible for the marketing integration between our core business and the LEGOLAND theme parks globally. I just returned from Japan and Malaysia where we are opening new attractions later this year. And while very exciting, the business travel certainly gets harder with a little one at home. Please send our regards to the NYA family and thank you again for the kind note and gift.”

“I moved down to SC a couple of years ago and love it here. But – and there is always a ‘but’, isn’t there? – since the move I’ve heard not a word from NYA, so wanted to make sure you all (See, I’m talking Southern already) have my ‘new’ contact info.
“I’ve been doing some wonderful traveling since my retirement, most recently a Danube River cruise and also St. Martin – and of course Maine (Boothbay Harbor) summers. Other than that, I’ve been in a few writing groups, am a volunteer for Meals On Wheels, play tennis, enjoy some biking and a lot of photography here around the Charleston, SC, area, and just recently took my first parachute jump. I haven’t yet quite come down from the latter experience, figuratively speaking of course. What a ‘high’! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that one).
“Anyone know if there are any plans for a 50th reunion for the Class of ’62?”
Millard “Bob” Crossett ’47

George Briggs ’99
“I am living in Brooklyn, NY with my wife, Becca, and our beagle, Archie. I am a Latin teacher currently working at Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, CT. Before working there, I lived and worked at St. George’s School, a boarding school in Newport, RI. I still wear Converse All-Stars, but the colors match now. We all have to grow up sometime, I suppose.”
Eleanor Rideout Feliu ’57
“I remember my years at NYA very fondly. It was a wonderful place to attend high school during a much more innocent time. I always felt that the education I received there served me well.” Eleanor is retired from the National Security Agency in Ft. George G. Meade, MD in 1995 after 35 years of service.
