Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest for high school students. Regional winners go on to the state competition at the Franco-American Heritage Center, Lewiston on March 23, 2012 (snow date March 30). The state winner will represent Maine in the National Finals in Washington, DC held May 13 – 15.  The Maine state champion will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete at the National Finals. The state champion’s school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. The first runner-up at the Maine State Finals will receive $100 and his or her school will receive $200 for the purchase of poetry books.  At the Poetry Out Loud National Finals a total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be awarded, with a $20,000 award for the National Champion. The second-place winner will receive a $10,000 award; the third-place winner will receive $5,000; and the fourth- to ninth-place finalists will each receive $1,000. Their schools will receive $500 for the purchase of poetry books. There will be one runner-up in each semifinal competition. That student will not advance to the finals, but will receive a $1,000 cash award and $500 school stipend.

Poetry Out Loud is supported by The National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation in partnership with state arts agencies (in Maine, the Maine Arts Commission).

Miller, a 2008 graduate of NYA, is currently a senior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Comparative Literature with a concentration in Italian and a minor in German. In the spring and summer of 2011, she spent seven months studying abroad in Italy and Germany. During the first five months, she studied at the Università di Bologna (University of Bologna) in northern central Italy. All classes were in Italian, and she lived in an apartment in the city with Italian students. Next, she traveled to Göttingen, Germany for two months of intensive German language study at the Goethe Institut, where she lived and attended classes with a diverse group of would-be German speakers from around the globe.

While abroad, Miller kept a blog (unavventurabolognese.blogspot.com) so her family and friends could follow her adventures. Her exhibition will consist of work — text and images — drawn from that blog, providing a snapshot of what such an experience can entail. Miller hopes her exhibit will inspire students to venture abroad themselves.

Applicants must be nominated for the award and should demonstrate qualities that are intrinsic to NYA’s mission. The nomination process is open to any adult who knows the student’s academic abilities and character and can speak to that on the nomination form. (NYA teachers, coaches and staff are not eligible to nominate students.) Nominees will be invited to apply to NYA, and a Scholarship Committee will review the applicants and invite the top ten finalists to campus for interviews. Nominations must be received by January 10, 2012, and applications are due on February 10, 2012. Scholarship recipients will be notified by March 20, 2012.

Students were selected after November auditions requiring them to learn several scales, a solo, an ensemble piece, and sight-read. Over 1,000 students auditioned statewide. “This is the largest number NYA has had accepted in recent memory, and we are pretty ecstatic here in Higgins [Hall, the music building],” said Linda Vaillancourt, String Ensemble and Middle School Band Teacher.    

In addition to the All-State Music Festival, 35 students from NYA were selected to perform at the District 2 Honors Vocal and Instrumental Concerts. NYA students were selected from more than 1,200 auditions.  Liz McIntosh ’16 (Falmouth) received the highest score in the district for Middle School violin. District 2 covers schools in Portland to Lewiston/Auburn to Bethel.

The next competition is the State Tournament in Bangor on Saturday, February 11.

Creative cardmakers hard at work!

Science teacher Barbara Farrell and Grace Gilbert ’13 (North Yarmouth) organized the event. On Friday, Barbara reported that she “went to Ronald McDonald house and dropped off 43 cards that were made yesterday at the card making event. They were SOOO thankful!  We also raised about $130 for A Village of Children, with a few more donations to be collected … Thank you to those who donated money to A Village of Children, to those who made cards for Ronald McDonald House and to those who did both!!!  I hope you had as much fun as I did.  It was wonderful to see the MS and US faculty, staff and students’ creativity and generosity in action.”

Writer Susan Conley will visit North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 to speak with Upper School students followed by several workshops with Upper School English classes. From 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Conley will read and sign books in Higgins Hall (168 Main Street, Yarmouth) that is open to the public (donation suggested). Royal River Books will provide books for sale at a 10% discount.

Conley is the author of the critically acclaimed The Foremost Good Fortune, a memoir that explores her experiences in China with her family as she battles breast cancer. Currently, she is writing a novel to be published by Knopf. In addition to writing, Conley co-founded The Telling Room in Portland (ME), a non-profit creative writing center for students ages six to eighteen.

Conley’s visit is part of a visiting writers’ series entitled Writers in Process: Bringing the literary world to NYA and Yarmouth. The series began in October with Lily King, author of Father of the Rain, The English Teacher and The Pleasing Hour. Each visit will include an evening lecture and book signing open to the public.

Raeder was a professional coach in the NHL for twenty years. He has worked with some of the league’s best goalies, including Evgeni Nabokov, Miikka Kiprusoff, and Mike Smith just to name a few. Raeder has also coached for the Los Angeles Kings, Boston Bruins, San Jose Sharks and was the head coach at Division I Clarkson University.

Raeder played college hockey at the University of New Hampshire and was an All-American in 1974. He was drafted by the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association and by the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League. He played for the Whalers in 1975-77. During his 1976 season, he was selected to play for Team USA in the inaugural Canada Cup.
