Ecological Footprint Quiz – How many Earths do YOU need?

After taking the ecological footprint quiz, the calculator gave you two numbers.  It told you how many Earths we would need if everyone lived like you, as well as how many global acres you personally need to live your lifestyle.  Tell your two numbers and reflect on how you felt.  Were you surprised at the numbers?  Were you relieved?  Embarrassed?  Did you find that you wanted to explain yourself ?  Why?  Try to dive deep into how you feel about the results.  Remember, be honest about your thoughts – we are not going to persecute anyone for their numbers! :)

Overpopulation of Deer Debate: Should we take direct action, indirect action, or no action?

In class, you debated whether we should take direct, indirect, or no action in terms of the problem of overpopulation of deer.  Reflect on the following questions:

  • How do you feel you did in the debate?  What did you do well?  What specifically could have been improved?
  • Was it hard to debate a topic that was assigned to you?  Explain.

Did You Know This About Coral Reef Animals?

Pick one organism that lives in the coral reef.  Research the organism and write a paragraph that tells the reader something interesting about the organsim.  Your paragraph should start with “Did you know that …..”  Stick with one idea and explain it in detail.

Touch Tank Reflection

In class, you spent some time getting to “know” your organism from the touch tank.  Spend some time reflecting on what you learned from the animal.  Reflect in complete sentences, keeping the following questions in mind:

  • What did your animal look like?
  • What did you learn from your animal?
  • What was interesting about your animal that you did not know before?

Royal Fishing!

Now that we have used seine nets to catch fish (and other critters getting a free ride into our nets), let’s take some time to reflect.  Write a reflection about your experience.  Please write at least one paragraph (at least 5 sentences).  Below, you will find some ideas to think about; however, you do not have to answer each question.

What did you think about the fishing?  Was the seining hard, easy, fun?  What surprised you about the experience?  Was it different than what you expected?  How was it to do field work in the Royal River?  Did you work well with your group?  Do you enjoy field work?  What did you think about the results of fish we identified?  Was there a lot of biodiversity in fish in the area we fished?  Any other reflections from the whole experience?

7th Grade Earth Science – Green’s First Blog Post

You are about to post your first comment on our class blog.  Remember that I will be notified about your post before it gets published to the blog.  You won’t see your post until I “OK” the post.  This could take up to 24 hrs.  When you are writing a comment, you should write clearly and keep in mind that your post is PUBLIC.  ANYONE can see what you write – including your parents.  You should be proud of what you write.  Your comment should not look like you are texting a friend.  Additionally, if you are disagreeing with someone, make sure you are doing so respectfully.  IMPORTANT:  To make a comment, click on “comments” or “make a comment” (depending on whether you are the first to write a comment) and then type directly into the “Leave a Comment” box.  Do not hit reply – we will be replying to others’ comments later, but NOT YET!

Your first blog assignment:  President Obama has left you in charge of creating your own holiday.  He would like the holiday to celebrate science in some way. It can be a national holiday or a regional holiday, as long as it celebrates science with the following guidelines:

1. Create a Name for the Holiday and a date.

2. Explain why the holiday came into being.

3. Explain what activities are done on your holiday.
