2011-2012            NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY            2nd Edition

Welcome to the second edition of Emerge, NYA’s student-run, online literary and visual arts publication.

This year’s edition features a great variety of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, photography, and visual art from NYA alumni, faculty, staff, and students; over eighty distinct voices are reflected, and each piece of work was selected by Emerge student editors. Additionally, in March the editorial staff sifted through over ninety pieces of writing and selected three current NYA writers to receive Emerge writing awards:  fifth grader Amber Rose, freshman Sophia Kral, and sophomore Abby McKelvy.  Links to their work can be found at the bottom of the homepage.

This year the Emerge staff added a few elements to its publication for added texture, visual appeal, and depth. First, editor Hannah Hungerford created the new, doodle-inspired Emerge header on the homepage. Second, as part of the NYA Writers in Process series, published writers Lily King, Susan Conley, and Dawn Potter came to campus and Emerge staff members interviewed them. “Chasing the Muse” features the written interviews that sprung from these conversations as well as interviews with headmaster and artist Brad Choyt and musician Marcus Santos. Third, a new genre, graphic stories, is featured in the Upper School Fiction/Nonfiction section.  Take a minute to read the original graphic stories “Changes,” “The Deep End,” and “My Sister & Me.” Finally, Emerge’s first original video production, “Fish,” created by seventh graders, is highlighted this year.

As you dig in to Emerge, it is our hope that you are altered, affected, or inspired by what you find.
