Welcome to Emerge, NYA’s electronic literary magazine. Our hope is that we have been able to “merge” some of the literature and art of the NYA community into one electronic space. When you begin to explore our first edition, you may be surprised by the varied visions and voices you encounter. Our 2011 Emerging Writer award winner, Claire Daniels, tackles an authentic rendering of a young man’s narrative voice her piece of short fiction, “This Morning at Starbucks.” In an untitled poem about the relationship between a farmer and his chicken, Aldis Gamble conjures up themes reminiscent of Frost. Finally, our Middle School Young Emerging Writer winner, Joseph Biberstein, makes a clear, thoughtful case for learning to build boats in a persuasive essay. You’ll also find photography, paintings, collages, images of pottery, additional writing, and more.

Our hope is that with each additional issue of Emerge, our NYA pool of contributing authors and artists will grow.   We want each edition to reflect the greater NYA community as well as our talented student body. Therefore, along with NYA students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni have also contributed.  In this issue, enjoy learning a bit about Alaskan history from NYA alumnus, John Branson, a park historian  or contemplate NYA parent David Matson’s playful “boxes.”  If you would like to contribute to our magazine, feel free to submit your work to emerge@nya.org and we’ll add your voice to future editions of Emerge.

Oh, and one last thing. This is a publication created by the students, themselves. Our tireless editors, Rachel, Carly, Emily, Katherine, and Ruth, have selected and edited the pieces featured in this edition. And our fearless tech-guy, Anthony, has taken their ideas and created the Emerge website.  In the process, a lot has been learned about writing, editing, publishing, freedom of speech, and, of course, deadlines!

As summer is just around the corner, pull up a chair and peruse our site.
