Bob and Ted

by Michael Adams ‘17

This is the story of Bob and Ted.  Bob and Ted are brothers whose lives took very different paths.  You see, Bob and Ted are tomatoes.  Growing up, Bob and Ted shared everything: from the roots to collect water to the leaves that gathered sunlight.  They were innocent and care free tomatoes until one day…

“Bob, is that your belly?” Ted asked.

“I just ate,” Bob replied. “Wait, I hear it too.  It’s coming from over the hill.”

            “I see it.  It’s a huge truck!”

Before Bob could reply, he was swept up by a giant hand and dropped into a box with other tomatoes.  He could make out a label on the side: M.  “M?” Bob thought, “What starts with M?  Macedonia?  I’m going to Macedonia!  Awesome!”

Ted was not as happy as Bob was. “Bob!  Bob!  Come back!” But right after Bob left, Ted was taken away in a different truck that read: “Stonyfields.  Stonyfields?  Isn’t that a kind of yogurt?” Ted wondered.

Bob was exited about going to Macedonia, but he didn’t expect being stowed away in a box for two hours! Finally, someone opened the box and Bob was pushed onto a conveyor belt that put him through machinery which sliced and packaged him.  He was relived when that was over, but was frustrated when he was put back into a box and a truck, where he spent another two and a half hours in a very cold refrigerated truck. When he was finally taken out of the box for the second time, he knew what the M meant.  His box was moved off of the truck and into the building at a McDonalds in Portland, ME where he sat in the refrigerator for two weeks, until he was then plopped onto a greasy burger.

Ted was a whole different story.  He was shipped directly to Stonyfields Café where he was washed and freshly sliced onto a goat cheese sandwich that day.
