Sonnet to a Chair

Robert Miller ’11

Inspired by Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 18”

Should I attempt to sit upon your seat?
Your sturdy firm strong legs supporting me
And as I sit, my body lends you heat.
You hold me up as loft’ly as a tree.
I settle deeply down in your embrace
And feel luxurious textures on my arm.
The smooth curves of your cresting rail I trace
I feel that I could never come to harm.
A visage of contentment I do wear.
I fit my body smoothly against you
For I know that you’ll always for me care—
You’ll hold me up, forever to me true.
I press myself against your upholst’ry
And I relax, at peace and feeling free.
