Emma Laprise and Ted Elliott faced some stiff competition in…

Emma Laprise and Ted Elliott faced some stiff competition in their last swim meet. Falmouth’s team boasted a large number of swimmers (15 seniors!), while Catherine McCauley was also present and gave Emma some competition in her races. Needless to say it was a long, hot, crowded, and loud meet. NYA swam well, although no new best times were set. The water was so choppy, especially lane 1, that it would have been a small miracle. Ted placed 3rd in the 200 freestyle and 2nd in the backstroke, while Emma finished 5th in the same two events against a larger pool of girls. Their next meet is Monday 1/30 at 7pm at the Casco Bay Y against Windham.

(Fred Field photo)

WOW what a wild and crazy race today! NYA boys’ had a strong 2nd place finish today, and the NYA girls had a solid day as well! Congrats to our top finishers of the day, Cam Regan and Ian Moore, who placed 1-2 in the boys race! Thanks to all parents and skiers for being so flexible with the race changes at the last minute. Thanks again to all parent volunteers who made the race possible today – I couldn’t have pulled it off with out you! I am lucky to have such a supportive group of parents, and I truly appreciate all of your help today! It was a lot of fun!

Rebecca writes, “I was married to Frank Wallace in June 2011 in the back yard of my parents’ home in Swarthmore, PA. My father was the minister and my sister (Julia Bean ’04) was the maid of honor. Three weeks before our wedding, I became a proud auntie to Jack Bean, who is now 8-mos old. I’m pretty sure he should be a member of MENSA – he’s so smart (and cute)! I am in the process of beginning work at the US Department of State, and recently graduated from The George Washington University with a Masters in International Affairs and Conflict Resolution. My husband and I love Washington, DC and are planning to stay here for the foreseeable future.”

Laura is applying or a Masters program in publishing in England, “I’m ultimately interested in becoming a Literary Agent, but first I want to do a few years in Trade publishing. I currently work at an educational publishing house, and I love it here, but I think it is time I try something else. I’m choosing to go to England because – for one thing, England has a lot of publishing houses and their grad programs seem to be quite respectable, and for another, I just love London and think it would be great to spend a few years abroad.”

Grace Gilbert ’13 (Yarmouth) will represent North Yarmouth Academy (NYA)…

Grace Gilbert ’13 (Yarmouth) will represent North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) at the Southern Maine Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition to be held on February 8, 2012 at City Theater in Biddeford (snow date February 9). At an all-school assembly on January 9, Gilbert gave a recitation of “Over and Under” by John Brehm to place first in NYA’s competition.

Katherine Roche ’13 (Yarmouth) was the second place finisher with “Discrimination” by Kenneth Rexroth. Roche will serve as the alternate. In addition to these students, Upper School finalists included Muriel Adams ’15 (Raymond), Lily Dearing ’14 (Lisbon Falls), Charlotte Eisenberg ’15 (Peaks Island), Tess Hinchman ’15 (West Bath), Phong Ho ’12 (South Portland), Ellis Miskell, Nyajal Ngoal ’13 (Portland), and Brian Trelegan ’12 (Cumberland.) Upper School English Teacher Erica Kent explained, “Yesterday was our school-wide Poetry Out Loud competition, a chance to highlight each grade level winner. Getting up in front of the entire Upper School is in and of itself a real challenge, but to imbue complicated poems with nuance and feeling makes the task even greater. The freshman class, in particular, worked very hard on this process, and four girls were selected to read out of the ten finalists. All of the kids did an amazing job. Their poise, focus, and willingness to be vulnerable were among the group’s attributes. We look forward to cheering on our winner, Grace Gilbert, when she participates next month in the regional competition. Next on the horizon is a poetry festival in April with participants grades five through twelve.”

Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest for high school students. Regional winners go on to the state competition at the Franco-American Heritage Center, Lewiston on March 23, 2012 (snow date March 30). The state winner will represent Maine in the National Finals in Washington, DC held May 13 – 15. The Maine state champion will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete at the National Finals. The state champion’s school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. The first runner-up at the Maine State Finals will receive $100 and his or her school will receive $200 for the purchase of poetry books. At the Poetry Out Loud National Finals a total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be awarded, with a $20,000 award for the National Champion. The second-place winner will receive a $10,000 award; the third-place winner will receive $5,000; and the fourth- to ninth-place finalists will each receive $1,000. Their schools will receive $500 for the purchase of poetry books. There will be one runner-up in each semifinal competition. That student will not advance to the finals, but will receive a $1,000 cash award and $500 school stipend.

Poetry Out Loud is supported by The National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation in partnership with state arts agencies (in Maine, the Maine Arts Commission).

North Yarmouth Academy is an independent, college preparatory, coeducational day school serving students in grades five through twelve. For 198 years, NYA has fostered integrity, character and intellect in young adults.
