Capital Initiatives & Endowment

Vision

The Campus Master Plan, approved by the Board in 2006, was designed to revitalize and expand the NYA campus to meet all anticipated needs through 2016. Our vision calls for investing a minimum of $25 million in NYA’s campus and endowment. Upon successful completion of Phase I of the Campus Master Plan in 2005 (Science Center, Middle School, athletic facilities and endowment), the Academy is proceeding with a phased approach to achieving the vision for NYA’s Bicentennial.

Phase I: “Securing Their Future” Campaign – COMPLETE

Launched in 2003, the “Securing Their Future” campaign for NYA succeeded in completing Phase I of the Academy’s long-range plan for campus development. Through the generosity of 513 Trustees, parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends, NYA exceeded the declared campaign goal of $6.5 million and raised more than $7.2 million to secure the future on North Yarmouth Academy.

The Priscilla Savage Middle School, the new Science Center, significant new investment in the NYA endowment and the resurfacing of Lewis Field have had a tremendously positive impact on the quality of academics and student life at NYA. Inspired to provide similar enhancements for NYA’s Upper School and to address the needs of a growing and diversified student body, the Board of Trustees approved a new Master Plan on December 14, 2006 that will build, revitalize, and expand NYA’s campus and programs to address the Academy’s anticipated needs through 2016.

Phase II: “The Next200” Campaign – A $9 Million Comprehensive Campaign

To complete Phase II of the Master Plan is ambitious and will require more funding and larger gifts than the Academy has ever received in any previous fundraising effort. It will be accomplished by following a thoughtfully constructed comprehensive plan for fundraising and development designed to benchmark success, grow enthusiasm and momentum, and enhance the long-range fund raising capacity of North Yarmouth Academy.

Renovation of Russell Hall – COMPLETE

A newly renovated Russell Hall will house the NYA Language Center and significantly enhance NYA’s acclaimed foreign language programs. A state of the art language lab, five large technologically integrated classrooms and a conference room will be accessed by a new elevator and two new fire stairs at either end of the structure. Replacement windows, as well as new heating, plumbing and electrical systems will drastically improve the look, feel and economy of this historic structure.

Gymnasium

Active athletic participation is a core value of North Yarmouth Academy. All of our students participate in a team sport each season. The current NYA gymnasium does not adequately address this critical need. Therefore, to accommodate the school’s expanded athletic program and to nurture a life long enthusiasm for athleticism in our students, new facilities are required.

The Master Plan recommends building a new 14,500 square foot athletic facility connected to the Travis Roy Arena that includes a full-size varsity basketball court, lobby/ticket area, varsity and visitor’s locker rooms, coaches’ office and various training, meeting and storage rooms. Bleacher seating for will also be included to accommodate NYA’s enthusiastic fans.

Construction for the gymnasium will begin once the funds have been raised.

Endowment – Integral Part of the Campaign

A prominent focus of every phase will be the significant growth of NYA’s endowment. Restricted and unrestricted endowed funds provide the Academy with great flexibility. Increased maintenance needs for new facilities and having funds available for student and faculty needs are a constant. The commitment to raising endowment funds will also be a constant.

Annual Fund – Integral Part of the Campaign

As a comprehensive effort, the Next200 Campaign will provide opportunity for engagement and meaningful participation from every member of every NYA constituency. The Annual Fund will capitalize on the campaign event to increase and broaden engagement and participation of all constituencies. Our goal is to grow the Annual Fund by a minimum of $20,000 each year during Phase II, raise a minimum of $1,000,000 through Annual Fund activity, and achieve 38% program growth by the end of the campaign period.

Future Phases

Student Center

Safford Auditorium has long served as the central multi-purpose gathering place for the entire NYA community. Theatrical productions, daily meetings, campus-wide assemblies, and more than 100 annual special events compete for time and
space in Safford each day. The existing cafeteria and kitchen are undersized and struggle to accommodate the dining needs of the entire student, faculty and staff population.

A new 6,000 square foot Student Center will be built along the north edge of Lewis Field. It will house the NYA dining room and kitchen, as well as provide a large, inviting gathering space overlooking the athletic fields to significantly enhance the student experience at NYA. Additionally, the Student Center will create a new quadrangle space behind Curtis Hall for special events and NYA community enjoyment.

Safford Auditorium

The construction of the NYA Student Center will pave the way for the historic renovation of Safford Auditorium and the vital enrichment of the NYA Performing Arts program. Serving the music and drama departments, the Performing Arts program is a fundamental component of the NYA experience. NYA is proud of our nine performing music groups and the four theatrical productions presented by our students annually, yet there is currently no large theater on campus, requiring that our students perform either in our crowded cafeteria or off-campus.

Once renovated, Safford Auditorium will provide seating for 300+ and greatly improve the music and drama programs. An addition will also be constructed to accommodate a greenroom, as well as a costume and prop storage area.

Academy Hall

Built in 1847, Academy Hall stands on the site of the original NYA classroom building and contains many historically significant attributes. The history and character of the building make it  physically and symbolically appropriate to become the center for Admission and Alumni. The great hall in the center of the building will be renovated to become Alumni Hall, with restored murals and a warm, inviting “living room” atmosphere for alumni to gather and reconnect. Climate controlled spaces will allow the prominent display of 200 years of NYA archival and historical collections. This space will also serve as a waiting room for admissions visitors, giving them an appreciation for the school’s history and prominence.

Visual Arts Center

The Visual Arts program currently resides in modified residential space in Bates House and one large art room in Curtis Hall. The studio space in Bates House is the most inadequate facility at NYA. A Visual Arts Center will be created by renovating Bates House and Weld House, connecting them along the rear of the property with a large, 6,000 square foot open studio, and unifying the complex with an entrance and sculpture courtyard on Main Street. These renovations will add large visual arts 2-D and 3-D studios; printmaking/photography darkrooms and offices; an elevator; fire stairs; and additional parking for 14 cars.

Curtis Hall

Renovation of Curtis Hall will allow through-access from the front of the building to the new quadrangle. A 24,800-square-foot project, the renovated Curtis Hall will provide eight large classrooms and learning center/seminar/computer rooms. Renovations to the Informational Resource Wing will expand resources such as the library and IT office.
