For over a decade, NYA students have met in the heart of winter to bow to the gods of rock, to work hard and play even harder, to cooperate and have fun, and to perform in venues that include Portland clubs and screaming crowds of hundreds. Oh yeah, and they’re the best High School rock band in Maine.

NYA Studio Band is an afterschool ensemble that fulfills the winter afterschool activity requirement. From mid-November until late February, we meet Monday-Friday from 3-4:30 in Higgins Hall. We play a wide range of contemporary music that leans heavily toward rock, but has also included heavy doses of hip-hop, klezmer, folk, and reggae. Students choose what they play, and are very involved with planning, leading and organizing the ensemble. While the group is oriented toward guitars, drums and basses, it has often included instruments like trumpet, sax, cello, trombone, violin, accordian, and piano.
