$5650 in grants announced — Spring 2011
Just before spring break, we announced the grants awarded for our second and final grant cycle of this academic year. The grant fund comes from our various fundraisers and is available to staff, academic departments, support functions, clubs, and all areas of extra curricular activity (e.g. arts, athletics, service) that support the mission of NYA. Grant requests are entertained twice in each academic year (November and February) through formal request made to our Grants Committee, which then evaluates the requests for recommendation to the Executive Committee. This round was particularly challenging as we had over $10,000 in grant requests but only $5650 to award! Mimi Olins was awarded $450 for her clay program. Abbie Sewall was awarded $584 to purchase a camera, cutter and for a guest instructor to conduct a Cyanotype Workshop. Mike Dutton was awarded $750 for the MS athletic program to purchase balls, goals and floor hockey equipment. Peter Sillin was awarded $1615 to purchase maps and a map mounting rack for US History classes. Barbara Farrell was awarded $800 to purchase a mimio for her classroom. Finally, the language department was awarded $1300 to purchase a document camera. A big thank you to Susan Burns, Grants Committee Chair, and to her committee: Holly Mitchell, Kate McKelvy, Sheila Nappi, Julia Paige, Pat Thompson, and Mike Rayder for their collective work, and to all volunteers, donors and other participants who support our fundraisers that make these grants possible.
