“… your petitioners, humbly aware of the importance of the instruction of youth, in the winter of 1810-11 subscribed a sum of money toward erecting a school-house in which youth of both sexes might have an opportunity of receiving better education than common town schools generally afford …” [Petition for Incorporation of North Yarmouth Academy; dated 28 December 1813.]
“Whereas the encouragement of literature in the rising generation has ever been considered by the wise and good as the basis upon which the safety and happiness of a free people ultimately depend … That there be, and hereby is established, in the town of North Yarmouth, an Academy, by the name of North Yarmouth Academy, for the purpose of promoting piety and virtue, and for the education of youth in such languages, and such of the liberal arts and sciences as the trustees shall direct …” [An Act to Incorporate the North Yarmouth Academy; approved by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts 04 February 1814.]
