NCAA Registration & Guidelines

The NCAA has established a clearinghouse to certify athletic eligibility for Division I and II.  If you intend to participate in athletics at a Division I or II school as a freshman, you must be registered with and be certified as eligible by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse.

If you are planning to participate in athletics at a Division III school, you do not need to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse.

You should register with the Clearinghouse whenever you decide you would like to participate in athletics as a college freshman.  It generally is best to register after your junior year grades are recorded on your transcript.  Although you can register anytime prior to participation, if you register late, you may face delays that will prevent you from practicing and competing.

  1. Fill out the online form at www.eligibilitycenter.org
  2. Pay the fee of $65, unless you request and qualify for a fee waiver
  3. Request official copies of your SAT or ACT scores be sent to the NCAA (CEEB Code-9999)
  4. Request that an official transcript be sent to the NCAA from each high school you have attended.

A high school student who plans on playing a sport or hopes to be considered for an athletic scholarship at a Division I or II college must meet specific academic requirements set forth by the NCAA.

Division I: A student must have at least a 2.0 GPA in 16 core academic courses and the required SAT/ACT scores based on the test score sliding scale.

Division II: A student must have a 2.0 GPA in 14 core academic courses and a combined SAT score of an 820 (CR and MA) or an ACT sum score of 68.

WHAT THE NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE PROVIDES

The Clearinghouse will send your eligibility status to any Division I or II institution that requests it, provided you have given permission on your student release form for the Clearinghouse to release this information.  Please note that the Clearinghouse will not send your eligibility information at your request; rather, the institution must make the request for that information.
