NYAGVXC @ Class C Regionals – States here we come

10/22/2011

After the starting times for the meet were moved twice (the last time being Friday afternoon) we made it to Twin Brooks in Cumberland for our 12:30 meet start.  The course was sloppy after the weeks rain with the wooded section draining nicely but all areas of the course that were once grass now were slick mud.  Coming into the race the girls knew the meet was going to be a close one and that every person passed would likely make the difference.  Before the meet even started two members of the team struggled with the

NYAGVXC – Strong WMC showing with reduced numbers

10/15/11

The girls cross country team competed at St. Joseph’s College in Standish on Saturday in the Western Maine Conference Championships.  The meet was supposed to take place on Friday in Falmouth but was postponed due to course conditions.  The new site was an entirely fresh course and the girls adapted well.  The trails were narrow and the competition fierce but all of the girls went out hard from the gun and kept pushing through to the finish.

The team finished 4th in the division 2 competition just 2 points behind perennial rival Waynflete without having both Maggie and Sarah.  Finishing 5th in the race (just seconds out of the 3rd) was Hillary.  Next up for NYA was Hannah who,

NYAGVXC Results – Last Home Meet

10/7/2011

The NYA Girls Cross Country Team hosted its last home meet of the season on Friday.  The course at Royal River Park was still slightly muddy from the heavier rains earlier in the week but that didn’t seem to slow down our harriers.  All of the girls who finished the race ran stellar times compared with those back in early

NYAGVXC – Results from the first home meet

9/9/2011

The NYA Girls Cross Country team had its first home meet of the season on Friday afternoon in the Royal River Park.  The temperature was perfect for the 3 team race although the course was a bit slippery.  Tons of parent and faculty fans showed to the meet and volunteered to help us run an execptionally smooth race.  The team fielded all 8 girls for the first time this season with impressive results finishing 2nd to Greely and ahead of Poland.  See Full Results.

From the gun the girls knew how to pace themselves and used their knowledge of their home course to their advantage as they all cut smooth straight lines between each of the turns in the open field sections of the race.  First mile times were fantastic and set the NYA

9/9 Meet @ Royal River Park info

A couple of points about tomorrow’s meet:

  1. Please note that it is a home meet in Royal River Park in Yarmouth.  Highschoolsports.net has it wrong when it lists Poland.
  2. The girls race at 4:30 and the boys at 5:00
  3. Volunteers for the race will be most welcome.  Duties will mostly consist of standing at key parts of the race course and directing the runners.  No experience required; all training (Stand here!  Point that way!) will be provided.  Please let me or Coach Mazzurco know if you can help out.

NYAGVXC – Meet Results from Falmouth on 9/2/11

9/2/11

The NYA Girls XC team raced in the first official Western Maine Conference meet of the season on Friday at Community Park in Falmouth.   Community Park is the site of the Western Maine Conference Championship meet in October so running a race on this challenging course was good practice and experience.  Falmouth, York, and Lake Region all were in attendance.

It was a hot and steamy day at gun time.  6 of our 8 girls were on the starting line and by the finish only NYA had all of its runners finish the race.  This included Ellis who bravely decided

NYAGVXC: Results from Class C State Championship

October 30, 2010

Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, Maine was the site of the State Championship XC races on Saturday.  It was windy, cool (about 40-45 degrees), and the course was slick.  We went up to Belfast on Friday night and ran the majority of the course so that Saturday the girls were prepared for an easy warm-up of the first mile and then a bit extra around the fields.  All in all the girls were ready to try and at least earn the same spot they finished at regionals (3rd) and try to move up into 1st or 2nd.

The race started exceptionally fast, faster than any of the girls have gone out all season.   Our first runner, Hillary, went through at 6:20 while our 7th was through under 8.  The second mile was rough with puddles and mud all over the fields and the woods were treacherous, claiming one NYA victim who bounced back and continued on.  At the 2nd mile it was clear that we were on track for great times, but our hopes of claiming one of the top 2 spots was unlikely since the other 2 teams had ALSO improved as much as we did.  Through the 3rd mile the girls were able to pick off some additional runners and hold off a competitive Freeport team to hold on to their 3rd place spot by 9 points.

All in all it was a great day for the girls team.  They set high goals coming into the State Meet and, as such, improved immensely.  Hillary Detert led the team for the final time this season finishing 6th (21:09) and earning a top 10 medal.  She was able to catch several runners and actually finish ahead of some runners who had bested her the previous week.  Maggie Meixell finished in 13th (21:56) a massive improvement over the last time we raced at Belfast.  Sarah Jordan finished in 19th (22:14) about 1:15 faster than last week which is the largest jump in time for our top 5.  Morgan Scully finished in 41st (23:30) after struggling through her final mile she was still able to best last week’s time and finish with a strong sprint.  Rounding out our top 5 was Hadley Gibson who finished in 60th (24:19) after flying through the first mile she fell in the mud in woods in the 2nd mile but was able to pull together a strong last 800m to cut 30 seconds off her time from last week.  Anna Jaeger was 6th for the team finishing in a very respectible 25:57 almost a minute and half faster than last week.  Our 7th runner was Adela McVicar (26:14) who dropped an unheard of 2 minutes off her time from the previous week!

The girls put their best foot forward on Saturday.  They were supportive of each other, had their heads held high before and after the race, and gave all they had and it shows.  The team goal going in was to try to move up a spot or 2 as a team, but worst case, maintain 3rd.  They certainly went for it, improved as individuals, and, though we can’t control the equal improvement of the other teams around us, were able to hold on to our 3rd place spot.  It was a great end to a successful season.  Congratulations ladies!
