10/29/11 – The NYA Boys Cross Country team capped a magical two-year run today by repeating as Class C State Champions. On a cool, cloudy day, the runners took on a muddy 3.1-mile Twin Brook course and the best Class C competition in the state and emerged a dominant championship team, beating runner-up Waynflete by a score of 74-108.

After the starting times for the meet were moved twice (the last time being Friday afternoon) we made it to Twin Brooks in Cumberland for our 12:30 meet start. The course was sloppy after the weeks rain with the wooded section draining nicely but all areas of the course that were once grass now were slick mud. 10/22/11 – The NYA Boys cross-country team defended its Western Maine Regional championship in convincing fashion today. On a very muddy Twin Brook course, the team put 5 scorers in the top 17 and all 7 runners in the top 30 to clinch the win with 59 points. Waynflete was runner-up with 92 points. Full results here.

The condition of the course was a significant factor in the race. Heavy rains earlier in the week left the fields very soft and there were plenty of muddy spots in the woods, which kept many times on the slow side. Cam Regan ’12 led the team, cruising to 6th place in the field of 105 Class C runners and finishing in 17:37. Evan Kendall ’12 continued his return to top form with a 17:57 finish, good for 9th place overall. Rudy Guliani ’12 ran another solid race (12th / 18:13), barely missing out on a top 10 finish. Alex Coffin ’12 (15th / 18:35) turned in his second fine performance in a row as the team’s fourth man. And Matt Malcom ’15 was the top freshman in the Class C Regionals with a time of 18:42 (17th). Grant McPherson ’12, NYA’s 6th man, displaced the 4th runner (or higher) of every other team in the field (22nd / 18:57) while Brian Trelegan ’12 very nearly accomplished the same feat from the 7th position (29th / 19:26).
NYA next competes at the State Championships on Saturday 10/29 – also to be held at Twin Brook. The girls will race at 11:00 and the boys at 11:45. Come cheer us on!

The girls cross country team competed at St. Joseph’s College in Standish on Saturday in the Western Maine Conference Championships. The meet was supposed to take place on Friday in Falmouth but was postponed due to course conditions. The new site was an entirely fresh course and the girls adapted well. The trails were narrow and the competition fierce but all of the girls went out hard from the gun and kept pushing through to the finish.

The team finished 4th in the division 2 competition just 2 points behind perennial rival Waynflete without having both Maggie and Sarah. Finishing 5th in the race (just seconds out of the 3rd) was Hillary. Next up for NYA was Hannah who,

The NYA Boys cross-country team defended its title as champion of the Western Maine Conference small school division on Saturday. With 6 of the top 13 runners and a mere 36 points, NYA easily bested Fryeburg Academy (65), Waynflete (65), Merriconeag (96), Yarmouth (137), Sacopee Valley (154), and Wells (189). Among all schools in the WMC, NYA finished 2nd overall with 86 points, behind only state ranked #1 Falmouth (61), but ahead of Class B powerhouses such as Greely (122), Freeport (123), York (124), and Cape Elizabeth (141).

The NYA Girls Cross Country Team hosted its last home meet of the season on Friday. The course at Royal River Park was still slightly muddy from the heavier rains earlier in the week but that didn’t seem to slow down our harriers. The NYA Boys Cross-Country team returned from Belfast yesterday muddy but satisfied, with a strong 13th place team finish among 50 teams from all over Maine, New England, and even Canada. On a cool, wet day, the 3.1-mile course in Belfast was generally flat but a continuous ribbon of mud, which kept times slow but made the racing fun.
With many seniors at home to take the SAT, other runners had to improve their performances for the team to do well. Fortunately, many did. The Festival of Champions has an unusual format; freshmen run in their own heat, while all other runners are divided into seeded (fast) and unseeded (slow) heats. Then, all times are combined and the scores are calculated. NYA was led by Evan Kendall ’12, whose 18:13 race placed him 41st in the seeded race and 46th overall (of the 637 runners on the day). Rudy Guliani ’12 finished in 18:22 despite a spill that left him covered in mud and bleeding (53rd seeded / 60th overall). Brian Trelegan ’12 celebrated his birthday with a fabulous race that featured an astonishing closing kick (18:55 / 77th seeded, 87th overall). Grant McPherson ’12 bounced back this week with a dogged and helpful 18:58 (84th seeded / 95th overall). Matt Malcom ’15 came up big out of the freshman race. His 19:28 was good for 17th among the freshmen (of 163) and 157th overall. Ian Moore ’14 rounded out NYA’s varsity seven in 19:33 (24th unseeded / 168th overall).
Other NYA runners on the day included: Robert Field ’12 (20:11 / 62nd unseeded / 250th overall), Jake Burns ’13 (20:38 / 89th unseeded / 306th overall), John LeBlanc ’15 (21:26 / 70th freshman / 394th overall), Aldis Gamble ’13 (24:19 / 250th unseeded / 557th overall), and Oscar Zou ’13 (25:55 / 273rd sunseeded / 594th overall).
Many thanks to all who braved the conditions to support the team. Our next meet is Friday 10/7 at Royal River Park in Yarmouth.

The NYA Boys cross-country team finished 9th of 32 teams in the Small School Division at the Manchester Invitational on Saturday. On a very humid morning, the team fielded runners in three separate boys races: Freshman Boys, JV, and Small School Varsity. The hilly 3.1-mile course was a tough challenge under these conditions, but despite some troubles with injury and illness, the strong New England-wide competition spurred many Panther harriers on to new personal records.

9/9/11 – The NYA Boys cross-country team won its biggest regular-season meet in recent history Friday as it triumphed over Greely and Poland. Greely, ranked 3rd overall in the state and Class B State Champions 3 of the last 4 years, had to be considered the heavy favorite coming into the race. But on a cool, clear day, NYA’s boys outraced the Rangers over the 3-mile course at Royal River Park to take the victory. The final score was NYA 26, Greely 29, and Poland 85.
The battle between NYA and Greely started at the top, as NYA’s Cam Regan ’12 jumped out to a quick lead only steps ahead of Greely’s number one, Stefan Sandreuter.
