NYA nordic ski team – Season Update

The NYA boys’ and girls’ nordic teams have had a very strong start to the season despite the tough weather conditions and lack of snow. As a result, many of our races this season have been relocated to Black Mountain in Rumford (and even to New Hampshire!) We have done a lot of traveling in order to get the team racing and ready for our important races towards the end of the season. Despite the frustrating snow situation, this energetic and motivated team of 16 has persevered through the tough conditions and proven how well they can perform…and have had lots of fun doing it!

The boys’ team remains one of the top in the state and have won multiple races this season, proving to be tough competition leading up to the state championships. The girls’ team, comprised of three new to the sport and one experienced racer, continue to improve upon their results with every race. Both teams look to continue their strong seasons as we look forward to our final races of the regular season. The teams will compete in the Western Maine Conference Championships on Wednesday, February 8 at Libby Hill in Gray and on Saturday, February 11 at Stark’s Hill in Fryeburg.

NYA Boys 2nd at Western Maine Conference Championships!

On Saturday, the NYA nordic boys team placed second overall  at the Western Maine Conference Championships. Saturday’s race culminated the end of a two-day championship event. The team raced last Wednesday where they placed 2nd at the Libby Hill trails in Gray, and Saturday where the team won the race at Stark’s Hill in Fryeburg. Overall, the team placed 2nd and only two points behind Yarmouth. This was a very impressive finish considering the NYA’s #3 skier could not race due to illness, and that NYA has a team of 10 boys compared to that of Yarmouth’s 26!

The team is looking ahead to the Class C State Skiing Championships next week in Rangeley. The team will compete at the Rangeley Lakes Trails Center on Tuesday, February 22nd and Thursday, February 24th.

Freshman Ian Moore is recognized for his 3rd place finish in last week's WMC Championship freestyle race

NYA Boys Nordic Team 2nd Place at Sassi Memorial Race!

NYA Nordic Team at an early season race

Yesterday, at the Sassi Memorial Race at Black Mountain. In their most competitive race of the season with 28 boys teams from across the state, the NYA boys placed second behind powerhouse Yarmouth with 71 points. For full results with individual and team finishes, please click here or see our results page to the left.

The top finishers for NYA were freshman Ian Moore, with an impressive 6th place finish. Also finishing in the top-10 was Junior Cam Regan, less than a second behind Ian in 8th place. To round out the scoring for the Panthers was Jake Susla in 30th place, and Evan Kendall, also less than a second behind in 31st place. Close behind were Robert Field (42nd), Grant McPherson (49th), and Rudy Guliani (54th).

The boys placed 12th in this same race last year, and this 10-place improvement is very exciting and encouraging for the team’s upcoming races. The nordic team has one remaining regular season race this week in Fryeburg before they compete at the Western Maine Conference Championships the following week.

Please see the article about the race in today’s Maine Sunday Telegram.

3 Races in 4 Days…the nordic season is in full force!

Today’s race at Twin Brook concluded our busy weekend of 3 races in 4 days. I am absolutely amazed at our performance as a team this early in the season. To be second consistently in all 3 races is such a great result, and everyone has worked so hard thus far this season to achieve these results.

Although everyone skied so well today, I’d like to recognize a few outstanding performances. First off, Phong has been greatly improving his results every race after only learning to ski about one month ago. He beat 9 skiers at the Leavitt Classic, and 5 today. I know I am very impressed with his improvements, and he should be too! In addition, freshman Ian Moore had a stellar race today with a 4th place finish in a very competitive field – way to go, Ian! I would also like to mention Grant McPherson, who was a new skier last year and has consistently been in the top six over the past three races, which is a big improvement for him!

Thank you to all the parents for your support over the past 3 races, especially to Lance and Joy Guliani for all of the post-race treats and hot chocolate, as well as the Regans for hosting a great wax/dinner party last night. I am already so excited for next weekend’s race, and hope that the team knows how proud I am of their individual and team performances!

Let’s keep up the great work!

Training Camp Wrap-Up

Sugarloaf Training Camp 2010

The 2010-2011 NYA nordic team is all smiles at our training camp at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center last week. We enjoyed the new snowfall and amazing conditions by skiing both before and after lunch each day. It was really worthwhile for the team to be there for four days, and we now feel prepared and ready to take on the rest of the season!

Training Camp Update

The team is having a great training camp up at Sugarloaf thus far. We arrived yesterday to lots of snow and excellent conditions at the Outdoor Center. We skied both before and after lunch, working on our skating technique and getting our skiing legs “back.”

Today we traveled to the Rangeley Lakes Trails Center to race in the Rangeley Opener. The boys finished second to Yarmouth (an excellent result!), with Cam in 4th place, Jake in 8th, Evan in 11th, Rudy in 17th, Grant in 27th, and Phong in 54th (only his second day on skis!). Connor Regan (Greely), Cam’s brother, is joining us for our training camp this week and won the high school boys race today! I am currently trying to convince him to transfer to NYA… :)

It was a great showing with some good competition, including teams from Yarmouth, Gould Academy, Camden Hills, Orono, John Bapst, and Mt. Abrams. Please see the results section of the webpage (to the left) to view full results from today’s race.

Chris Whiting (NYA ’10 and nordic team alumnus) joined us for our race at Rangeley today. It was great to have him back for the day and support our team. He and I also raced in the open race after the high school races ended.

We have come back to the condo to amazing hospitality from Kristin and Craig – delicious dinners and desserts, and of course, the hot tub. Needless to say we are being quite spoiled at the moment! We plan to ski both skate and classic for the next two days, ending with a game of ski soccer on Friday before we head back south!

Stay tuned for more updates!
